I think we finally havey found the song title to supplant
"Everlasting Punishment" by Impious as my favorite
of the year. That honor goes to "Fucked by Fire,"
the lead track on Spiritual Warfare, the new album
by Bewitched.
And "Fucked by Fire" is more than just a clever
title; it’s a full-speed-ahead, drive-your-car-really-fast,
get-you-pumped-up-before-a-Ravens game kind of song. Bewitched
starts here and doesn't let up, with 10 tracks of old-school
thrash/death metal jams. Songs like "Let Darkness Come"
and "He Is in Me" don’t stray far from their
old-school Sabbath roots, matching the downtuned power chords
with vocals about demons and the familiar dark stuff that’s
been around since Ozzy was coherent. "He Is in Me"
goes one better and adds good old-fashioned thrash to the
equation. "Glorious Are the Ways of Death" is also
a clever title and would fit in on South of Heaven.
"This Is Goodbye" is another track that builds up
a cool vibe with a nice circular guitar riff. "My Skin
Loves the Steel" might have the album’s best lyrics.
I suppose if there is a complaint, it’s that the band
really doesn’t distinguish itself too much.
While the band rocks, the album doesn’t require repeat
listenings. Songs like "Black Burning Hatred" and
"Malevolent Force of Destruction" try to create
a menacing vibe but come off a bit cliché. On the other
hand, the opening of the title track is a direct rip-off of
"Seasons in the Abyss," right down to the slow intro
and six-minute length. Granted, the song is an instrumental,
but still, how about a trick Slayer hasn’t used yet?
All in all, Spiritual Warfare is one of those solid,
yet unspectacular records that brings nothing to the table,
yet takes nothing off it, to quote a Bill Simmons-ism. It
will give you some decent moments, for sure, but it won’t
give you anything new. |
