Come Death is the newest release from Norwegian death metallers Blood Red Throne. The title is appropriate as it seems the band, featuring guitarist, Tchort of Emperor/Green Carnation/Carpathian Forest, channels early '90s death metal—solid and certainly heavy but nothing that hasn't been done before.
Blood Red Throne were aiming for a "classic" death metal sound and that they achieve. Hell, they even rip through a cover of Gorguts' “Disincarnated.” But the problem is that strong songwriting simply isn't present. Sure, you're going to bang and thrash your way through songs such as “Slaying the Lamb” and “Rebirth in Blood,” but with a straightforward, more simplistic style, the songs need to be key. Blood Red Throne concentrates on this more than many other acts today, which feature songs taking off in 10 directions, but they're not catchy or memorable enough.
There are no gimmicks or over-production here--no bullshit. Hardcore death metal fans will admire what the band is doing. However, Come Death is an above average recording at best. Like I said, it's nothing that hasn't been done before.
