Hailing from Bristol, U.K., Burning Skies' sound falls somewhere
between Hatebreed and Deicide, running the gamut in extreme
metal. Desolation, their sophomore release for Lifeforce
Records, follows their critically acclaimed 2004 album, Murder By Means Of Existence. Sure, there are 100-plus
other bands that have a sound almost identical to this, but
Burning Skies incorporates enough tempo changes, breakdowns
and blast beats to keep things relatively interesting.
Influences ranging from hardcore to death metal are prominent,
especially the growling/screamed lead vocal combination. The
production of the album is tight and clear, with a heavy,
driving low end. The constant dose of double bass on this
album will leave your head pounding. Songs have enough catchy,
headbanging riffs to fill a shopping mall and there is almost
a complete absence of melody.
The all-out, grinding heaviness of Desolation warrants
at least a listen from the avid metal fan, if not a purchase.
Burning Skies surely won't earn points for originality, but
the brutality is unmatched.
