Crash Kelly's new album, One More Heart Attack,
is glam, hard rock and pop, influenced by Cheap Trick, Thin
Lizzy and other stripped-down rock acts of the '70s. The band
is the brainchild of Sean Kelly (guitars/vocals/bass),
a Toronto native who managed to get hooked up with guitarist/producer
Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses, Rock Star Supernova). Clarke
shares the production credit and plays guitar on one
song here. I can hear his influence. Crash Kelly sounds
a lot like Rock Star Supernova and the songs that were showcased
on the reality show competition. It's almost like it was recorded
during that same period.
The songs seem aimed at the teenie-bopper, female crowd.
Testosterone is lacking on this album for sure. It's
not dirty enough for sleaze-rock and not meaty enough
to even be considered hard rock. The choruses and the band's
free-for-all, fun-lovin' attitude are the sticking points.
Imagine that: Rock music that's fun. It's been a long time.
But for all the fun that Crash Kelly brings, I couldn't help
but cringe and even laugh out loud during many parts of One
More Heart Attack. Is this something from Saturday morning
cartoons? It's wimpy and equally as corny. There are some
bad things going on here. As much as I wanted to hate this
band, I couldn't help but fall in love with feel good-rocking
songs like “16 on a Summer Night,” “Trash
Talk” and “The Devil You Know.” |
