“I will stand the test of time!” exclaims Calgary,
Alberta-based band Divinity on their new album Allegory.
They sound like they mean it. And for 41 punishing minutes,
they deliver.
This is a band with some serious metal chops. Vocalist Sean
Jenkins takes on many personas, from clean vocals—harmonized
with bassist Nick Foster and guitarist Sacha Laskow—to
throaty growls and piercing screams. Allegory is
a fitting title for this album, as the band careens between
power metal, death metal, thrash and hardcore, sometimes within
the same song like on “Methodic” and “Plasma.”
Guitarists Laskow and James Duncan shred relentlessly, unleashing
power chords, solos and riffs like they purchased them wholesale.
Drummer Brett Duncan adds to the chaos by attacking his kit
like it just punched his mother. It all adds up to a record
that blends amazingly skilled musicianship with anthems you
can pump your fist to.
The best part about Allegory is that once you think
you have the band pegged, they come at you with something
different. For instance, after being beating you to a pulp
by the heavy rockers “Modern Prophecy” and “Strain,”
the band switches up on you with the piano intro to “The
Unending.” And just when you think that’s going
to be a ballad, they speed things up to an even faster tempo
than what they did before. The same goes for “Chasm,”
which features the cleanest vocals on the record but adds
frantic breakdowns and growls of doom to the mix.
I have to admit, I was not expecting much from Divinity.
You often never know what you are going to get out of these
things. But Divinity, despite not having a very inspiring
band name, can flat out bring it. They’ll get you swinging
your heavy metal hair with their power but knock your socks
off with their musicianship. This is high-quality, Grade-A
metal. |
