Brazil's Krisiun lay out a brutal sonic assault of technical death metal with AssassiNation. Vocalist/bassist Alex Camargo has the perfect deadly guttural voice for a death metal band, while guitarist Moyses Kolesne's precision leads and riffs send shivers down your spine with ear splitting solos and backing shrieks. The riffs which synchronize with Max Kolesne's lightning-fast double-bass drumming make for a technical sound similar to Fear Factory.

The first song, "Bloodcraft," is a relentless assault on the eardrums, with stop-start riffing and wailing guitars. As far as I'm concerned, this track is the undisputed champion of death metal. "Refusal" features some mind-bending fretwork unlike anything heard before in the death metal genre. Many bands will take note of this amazing guitar work, but I'm not sure it can be duplicated. "Father's Perversion" sounds 10 times deadlier than Deicide's "Scars Of The Crucifix" but has a similar song structure. "Doomed" is the now mandatory one-minute acoustic/guitar solo, while "Decimated" is mid-tempo, downtuned, traditional death metal. Krisiun close the album with a cover of Motorhead's "Sweet Revenge." They do the song justice, transforming it in true Krisiun style.

AssassiNation is a stellar release for Krisiun. Brutal, technical, impressive and even listenable. The question is, could you tell it is Krisiun without seeing the CD placed in the player? Probably not, but who cares. My feeling is that death metal fans that hear this will take it upon themselves to find out who is pummeling them from start to finish.

I'd recommend this to fans of Morbid Angel, Deicide and Obituary. As far as recent death metal releases go, you'll be hard pressed to find something as vicious and evil as this.
