Brutal, devastating, unrelenting, punishing, shredding, smoking—these adjectives are too often incorporated into reviews of metal albums for the lack of any better descriptive words and unimaginative writing. Well, guess what? I'm not going to use anything different here, because I'm running with a bad case of writer's block and, quite frankly, the preceding all accurately describe this slab of death-grind, featuring traditional guttural death metal vocals, tortured screams, blast beats and impressive guitar work.
March of the Parasite is the debut release of the Gothenburg, Sweden, band Laethora, which features Dark Tranquility guitarist Niklas Sundin and Provenance guitarist Joakim Rosen.
It's apparent these guys were seeking a means for a more extreme musical outlet than their regular bands, as this is closest to Deicide, Dismember, Bloodbath or Morbid Angel in sound. Primitive and raw, yet somehow this shit grows on you as the material actually seems to have a purpose—pure evil. While listening to this album, several disturbing images ran through my head, maybe because I'm just a sick individual who watches way too many horror movies, or it could be that Laethora has actually created something here, a harsh reminder of just how evil, destructive and disturbing an almost perfectly executed extreme metal album can be.
Strictly for death and grind fans only, March of the Parasite will stay with you, much like a sick and demented horror flick when you see it for the first time. A must-have.
