Sick Puppies bassist Emma Anzai graces the pages of Revolver magazine’s 2007 “Hottest Chicks in Metal” issue, but this Australian trio has more in common with countrymen Silverchair, Nirvana and other ‘90s rock acts than any metal band. Dressed Up As Life, their American debut, is undeniably poppy and mainstream, and vocalist/guitarist Shimon Moore has a smooth, pleasant voice. However, sparkling production, a crisp guitar tone and songwriting that isn’t afraid to break occasionally from traditional structure lend the songs a strong rock edge that keeps them from becoming as sugary sweet as they could have been had the band chosen another direction. Highlights include “Pitiful,” “All the Same” (which made a splash on YouTube last year for its video featuring Juan Mann, Sydney’s “free hugs” guy), “Issues” and “Anywhere but Here.” But the real gem is the disc’s closer, “The Bottom,” an up-tempo number that flat-out rocks.

Those who like their music heavy probably won’t find much to hold their attention, but Sick Puppies do what they do better than most.
