Fresno, Calif.’s Speakers for the Dead musical style falls somewhere between hardcore and thrash metal. Complete with a harsh/clean vocal attack, skilled soloing and strong melodies, the band’s style, though not completely original, is well executed and worth a listen.
The opening track, “Finally” best sums up what Speakers for the Dead are all about. In fact, this song is so damn heavy and melodic that it stands high above the others. Songs such as “No Wrong” and the experimental “Long Way” take on more of an alternative metal style, reminiscent of Jane’s Addiction. At other times, a nu-metal or hard rock sound prevails. Lead vocalist Curtis Shamlin ranges from an in-your-face scream similar to Trivium’s Matt Heafy to a Perry Farrell style. “About To Fall,” another strong track, has layered vocals that are somewhere between chanting and singing over a hard-rockin’ groove.
Overall, Prey for Murder is worthy of attention if you are a fan of any of the previously mentioned styles or bands. What the band may lack in originality they make up for with versatility.
Recommended for fans of Trivium, Godsmack, Jane’s Addiction, Coal Chamber, Korn.
