What exactly is The Esoteric? It’s hard to explain. The Lawrence, Kansas-based band seems to be rooted in hardcore but includes so many other genres of rock and metal in its sound that it cannot be accurately categorized. The closest comparison would be a strange cross between Black Flag and Clutch with much more abrasiveness then either band. The Esoteric is highly innovative and has created a new kind of hardcore sound on Subverter.

The band had success with its last effort, With the Sureness of Sleepwalking, and even had a minor hit on MTV2 and FUSE with the “Ram-Faced Boy” video. Nothing here clearly stands out as a potential single, but after repeated listens songs like the hardcore anthem “Destroy She Said” and the surprisingly epic-sounding “Don't Waste Guts” grow on the listener. The latter features a Pink Floyd-esque chorus that stands out like a sore thumb on an album filled with vocalist Steve Cruz’s vile, painful screams. The band cranks out dissonant riffs combined with these manic vocals or faster ’80s-inspired hardcore, then suddenly come together for seemingly improvised parts giving off a stoner rock vibe.

The Esoteric is a band to watch. Their unique sound has a knack for finding its way under your skin and you will no doubt enjoy it more and more with each listen.

Recommended for fans of Black Flag, Rollins Band, Clutch, Minor Threat, At the Drive In.
