Remember the “You know how I know you’re gay” scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin? Not to sound like Andy Rooney or Peter King here, but I think they should have a game called “You know how I know you’re in a brutal death metal band?” You could say something like: “You know how I know you’re in a brutal death metal band? You have a goofy name, you sing about death, double kick drums, blast beats and death growls.”

For Sweden’s awesomely named Vomitory, they’re batting about 1.000.

Awesomely goofy band name? Check.

Songs with titles like “Eternal Trail of Corpses,” “Scavenging the Slaughtered,” Flesh Passion” and “Cremation Ceremony?” Check.

Growling vocals. Check.

Now it may seem like I’m poking a lot of fun at Vomitory, but really, as far as these sorts of bands go, they’re pretty decent. They take much of their inspiration from Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and other thrash/death metal bands. They manage to squeeze some pretty kickass jams out, such as “The Burning Black,” a hardcore thrash jam. Unlike other bands like this, Vomitory has some musical chops and they vary their attack enough to not be derivative. When Vomitory doesn’t rely on a lot of the death metal cliches, they’re very good. Like I said, most of the time on this record they kick some ass, and they will certainly scare the shit out of the hippies and pink hats out there. Some of the tracks toward the end of the album start to sound a little familiar, though.

With this album, Vomitory certainly is not breaking any new ground. But then again, they aren’t exactly looking to reinvent the wheel. They’re looking to merely stomp some ass and take names. When these guys kick it up a notch, they can thrash with anybody. And in that vein, they succeed in making some extreme noise worth hearing.
