Wastefall's sound is best described as progressive metal, and the band obviously has a wide range of musical influences. The band members are excellent musicians, at times bringing to mind Tool, one of America's most experimental bands. They are also reminiscent of the lesser known and underrated Ours. The vocals come in a wide variety of styles, including soulful, classic metal singing in the vein of Queensryche and a Middle Eastern style. "The Muzzle Infection," among other songs, features intriguing female vocals sung in this Middle Eastern style.

Wastefall combine electric and acoustic guitar, violin, piano and a large mix of influences to create a unique sound. "Strife For Definition" features a soaring chorus and post-grunge guitar playing over double bass, while "Sleepwalk" is an eerie, ambient ballad. One listen to "E.Y.E." and you will immediately think you're hearing a leading European prog metal band. Wastefall effectively combine all these above styles into an interesting soundscape that is all their own.

Self Exile shows that some bands will try almost anything. In this case, it works well and we end up with an inspiring album. This isn't a record that you'll hear bumping out of car stereos. Self Exile is an album to listen to on headphones to take it in its entirety. Give Wastefall a try and see for yourself that there is still musical territory that has yet to be explored.
