Time to look back on another year that was in hard rock and metal. I don’t expect everyone—especially not a lot of very vocal online metal fans—to agree with what you’re about to read, but isn’t that part of what makes this sort of thing so much fun? I veer toward the hard rock side of metal, mostly staying away from the more extreme varieties (I’m sure my brother, Jeff, will cover some of that on his list), and I’m not claiming these are the best albums of 2014, end of discussion. No, these are simply the releases I enjoyed the most and have found myself going back to over and over this year. And oh yeah, rock is not dead. (more…)

Breaking the Fourth Wall (Live from the Boston Opera House), the new live Blu-ray/DVD from Roadrunner Records’ group Dream Theater, is set to premiere on Palladia and VH1 Classic at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. The Dreaming

The Dreaming’s new album Rise Again, which will be released on Feb. 10, 2015, via Metropolis Records, is deliberately pointed in its name. The band, which is a reunion of Stabbing Westward’s founding members Christopher Hall (vocalis) and Walter Flakus (keyboards, programming), makes no attempt to hide its plans. The Dreaming intends to deliver an album that brings back the early Stabbing Westward sound fans have been asking for. (more…)

Tear Out the Heart

Tear Out the Heart have harnessed their aggression and channeled it to deliver an incredibly inspired sophomore effort titled Dead, Everywhere, which will be in-stores 1/27/15. Substream Magazine adds, “We promise, you haven’t heard a scream quite like this. With a unique balance of clean vocals with the grit, Tear Out The Heart has mastered brilliant hooks and riffs that will be stuck in your head for days. On March 10, 2015, Judas Priest will release an expanded, three-disc version of its 1984 release Defenders of the Faith via Columbia/Legacy. The package will feature the original 10-track album remastered by producer Tom Allom and a complete live recording from the Defenders tour, recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California, on May 5, 1984.

Defenders of the Faith spawned such headbanging classics as “Freewheel Burning,” “Jawbreaker,” “The Sentinel,” “Some Heads Are Gonna Roll” and “Love Bites.” (more…)

Seether has announced its third annual Rise Above Fest, which will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, Maine. The lineup includes Godsmack, Seether, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, Papa Roach, All That Remains, Butcher Babies and more to be announced. Proceeds will go to SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

The World’s Loudest Month is rolling along with lineup announcements this week, unveiling the bands that will be playing Welcome to Rockville on April 25 and 26 in Jacksonville, Florida; Fort Rock on April 25 in Fort Myers, Florida; and Northern Invasion on May 9 in Somerset, Wisconsin.
