Testament_Brotherhood-coverReview by Jeff Maki
——
After The Gathering was released in 1999, Testament went on an extended hiatus, not returning until 2008 with The Formation of Damnation. That album and its successor,  Dark Roots of Earth (2012), weren’t just comeback albums, they also saw Testament honing its strengths: Chuck Billy’s powerful, melodic vocals, Alex Skolnick’s guitar playing, songs with catchy hooks, and lyrics that were intelligent and aware. It’s Testament’s classic thrash metal style, only modernized. After years of chasing after other leading metal bands, whether it was Metallica in the late ’80s and early ’90s, or Fear Factory and Machine Head in the late ’90s, Testament finally came to the conclusion that it is a legendary band in its own right. So does Brotherhood of the Snake stand up to Testament’s recent output? (more…)

Amaranthe_Maximalism

Review by Jeff Maki
——
I appreciate the over-the-top pop-metal of Sweden’s Amaranthe. I love its talented, sexy vocalist, Elize Ryd. I even like clean singer Jake E. and appreciate his Chester Bennington singing style. I even like its death metal vocalist—yes, the band has three vocalists—Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson. The band’s previous release, Massive Addictive, was Amaranthe’s breakthrough in the U.S. thanks to the hit single “Drop Dead Cynical.” I liked the band even more when I saw it open for Within Temptation in 2014. Amaranthe’s live show is the best of all of its metal styles (and Elize). When I heard the title of the new album, Maximalism, for the first time, I thought it was perfect. We were going to be getting Amaranthe to the max. (more…)

Lamb Of God

When Lamb of God recorded last year’s VII: Sturm und Drang, they held onto a song they felt was special enough to stand on its own: “The Duke.” The track, which finds frontman Randy Blythe singing about mortality, is dedicated to Wayne Ford, a fan of the band whom the singer befriended in late 2012. Ford was suffering from leukemia and after Blythe heard his story – captured on the band’s website – it left a profound impact on him.

To honor Ford, the group is releasing an EP, also titled The Duke, which features the hard-rock–leaning song along with another unreleased track that dates back to their Wrath LP, the thrashy, heavy “Culling,” which they finished up especially for this EP, along with live recordings of three Sturm und Drangtracks. KING 810

KING 810

Flint, Michigan’s KING 810 has announced details of a series of limited engagement live events for its new album, La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God, which will see the band offering a boundary-pushing live experience in intimate settings. Presented in 360degree sound, the immersive events are slated for Dec. 15 at the Agora Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio; Dec. 17 at Saint Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, Michigan; and Dec. 18 at Thalia Hall in Chicago, Illinois, with more dates to be announced in the coming weeks.

Fans are in store for a unique performance each night, with KING 810 engaging audiences in its intensely personal and often contentious world. The evenings are set to feature accompaniments from various performance artists, string players and more, with each location undergoing formative transformations to stimulate the senses and evoke the dark and potent themes of La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God. In contrast to the aforementioned live events, the show slated for Dec. 16 at Big Shots in Valparaiso, Indiana, is promised to be a night of outright chaos, with KING 810 bringing to town its trademark performance for an up-close-and-personal all-out war. The Wild!

The Wild!

Canadian rockers The Wild has debuted a new single titled “Ready to Roll” and announced a Feb. 17, 2017, release date of its new album, Wild at Heart. Listen to the song below.

This is a straight up Wild! song through and through, man,” says vocalist and lead guitarist Dylan Villain. “To me, it’s all about freedom and goin’ that extra mile when things need to be done. Whatever it is. Whenever it is. Whether we’ve been on the road for months playin’ shows or you’re still on from last night and gotta go to work the next day … Was it worth it? Hell yeah, it was worth it. We’re ready to roll.” (more…)
