Rex Brown

Multi-platinum selling artist Rex Brown has signed a worldwide deal with Entertainment One (eOne) with plans to release a debut solo LP later this year.

“I’ve been working on these songs for a long time,” Brown said.

The yet-to-be-titled full-length album will be the first time in Brown’s career in which he will serve as both lead vocalist and guitarist in a band.

“I am thrilled to have such an influential artist like Rex join the growing Entertainment One rock family,” said Scott Givens, SVP Entertainment One. “He’s influenced not just our other artists, but myself as well. It’s an honor for all of us to work with him.”

Brown wields a six-string guitar as confidently as he wore the bass in Pantera and Down. His voice crackles with easygoing spirit and truth-telling power. It’s a crunchy drawl that’s somewhere between the achingly resonant spiritual shamanism of Tom Waits and the instantly recognizable everyman AM radio vibes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. There are many perilous ways one can spend time off—volcano-boarding down Cerro Negro, Nicaragua’s active volcano, or maybe bungee jumping from a helicopter over the bubbling crater of Chile’s Villarrica volcano. How about a visit to Sao Paulo’s Snake Island, home of 4,000 golden lancehead vipers whose venom can melt human flesh? Or shark diving without a cage in South Africa? But nothing is quite as hazardous or risky as a night in the pit at a Slayer concert. Add to that the ferociousness of Lamb of God and Behemoth, and you’ve got a Satan-approved triple bill of Biblical proportions.

The six-week expedition will rage across North America beginning July 12 in Bemidji, Minnesota, winding up in Phoenix, Arizona, on Aug. 20. Slayer and Lamb of Godalso will play Wisconsin’s Rock Fest 2017 (July 13) and Rock USA 2017 (July 15), and then meet up with Behemoth at the Chicago Open Air Festival on July 16. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 3; log on to www.slayer.net/tour for all purchasing details. (more…)

The Dead Daisies

“Live & Louder,” The Dead Daisies’ new live outing, is set for release on May 19 on Spitfire Music/SPV.

From the moment The Dead Daisies dropped their first single “Long Way to Go” ahead of their European festival summer in June, the hits just kept on coming. The second single, “Join Together,” ramped up the release of the third studio album, Make Some Noise. The band also toured the United States with KISS, ending the run with a sold-out headline show at Los Angeles’ Whisky A Go-Go.

The next single, “Song and a Prayer,” was released with an accompanying short film and rang in the final touring phase of the year, which saw the band go to Japan for the first time, where it immediately became media and fan darlings, and went down a storm at the world-famous Loud Park festival. A string of dates in Korea for the USO followed and, as the year’s grand finale, a massive U.K. and European co-headline tour that played 30-plus shows to sold-out venues. (more…)

Dez Fafara of DevilDriver

Review by Jeff Maki
—–
DevilDriver, the headliner of the Bound by the Road Tour, now has seven studio albums under its belt. Yes, seven. The band has been around that long, and I’m getting that old. But the band in direct support on the tour has been around way longer—Death Angel. Thirty-five years to be exact.

Death Angel has been an absolute machine in recent years, churning out its style of Bay Area thrash metal with albums Killing Season (2008), Relentless Retribution (2010), The Dream Calls for Blood (2013) and last year’s The Evil Divide, which earned an honorable mention on my “best of the year” list. I also interviewed frontman Mark Osegueda in 2010 (read here) and again in 2016 (read here). Both times, his excitement and enthusiasm was unlike anyone I’ve interviewed. It turns out he carries this enthusiasm over to the stage (more…)
