Review by Greg Maki
With four bands from four different countries, Children of Bodom’s I Worship Chaos tour was an international affair. Even better, each act brought a very different sound to the stage, making for a pleasantly diverse night of metal in Baltimore.

The progressive metal stylings of Oni, from Canada, kicked off the evening. This is an interesting, talented band that hasn’t quite put it all together yet, but it was fun watching them as they’re figuring out how the pieces fit. Guitarists Martin Andres and Brandon White each can shred with the best of them, and the band’s secret weapon is John “D” on the xylosynth, a sort of electric xylophone that hasn’t been used in metal before. Vocalist Jake Oni’s clean singing complemented the music better than his barks and growls, but this definitely is a band to keep an eye on as it matures. (more…)

Children of Bodom: “Sunday Night, Bodom Night”

Children of Bodom, Eluveitie, Revocation, Threat Signal

By Jeff Maki

Apparently, Children of Bodom has a large following in the Baltimore area. Who knew? We had just been here a month ago when Machine Head played, and for whatever reason, Rams Head Live was barely at half capacity. But this was a Bodom night, and the closing show on the band’s 15th anniversary U.S. tour, so the fans were rabid, packing the venue from top to Bodom. (more…)

While Zakk Wylde undoubtedly is the center of attention in Black Label Society, his closest musical partner for the past several years has been John “J.D.” DeServio. In addition to playing bass in the band, J.D. picked up co-producing and mixing credits on the new album, Order of the Black (review). He’s also the founder, bassist and driving force behind another band, Cycle of Pain, which released its debut album in 2009 (review). With Black Label Society touring the United States and Canada throughout the fall on the Black Label Bezerkus, with support from Children of Bodom, Clutch and 2Cents, J.D. called in from the road to talk to Live Metal’s Greg Maki about the tour, the new album, Zakk Wylde’s sobriety and more. Rob and Alice throw a Halloween hootenanny

Jeff Maki: For the superstars of shock—Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper—every day is Halloween. But still, the pairing of these two iconic shock rockers, first for the Gruesome Twosome tour in the spring and now for the fall run of Halloween Hootenanny, was a can’t-miss show. For this stop at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., the tour collided head-on with Black Label Society’s Black Label Berzerkus tour, making this a one-time Halloween festival.

Greg Maki: Zombie and Alice alone make for a great concert bill. Add Murderdolls, Black Label Society (my favorite band), Children of Bodom, Clutch, 2Cents, a haunted house and concert-goers in costume, and I can’t think of a better way to spend an October afternoon/evening. (more…)
