In some ways, Men of Honor, the second full-length effort from Adrenaline Mob, feels like a debut album. I don’t mean to demean the band’s actual debut, Omerta, released in 2012, but it always left me feeling a bit cold, like it was more a studio project than a real band—which it sort of was at the time, as a collaboration of Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen and former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, with Mike Orlando handling both guitar and bass. Since then, the Mob has added Disturbed bassist John Moyer and replaced the departed (not departed in the mob sense of the word, of course) Portnoy with Twisted Sister’s A.J. Pero. (more…)

Events take a dramatic turn for Dream Theater
Keyboardist Jordan Rudess discusses the new album and more

It has been a wild 15 months for Dream Theater. In September 2010, drummer Mike Portnoy shocked the music world by leaving the band he helped found 25 years earlier. The remaining four members of Dream Theater (guitarist John Petrucci, keyboardist Jordan Rudess, bassist John Myung and vocalist James LaBrie) pressed on, auditioning a handful of the best drummers in the world before settling on Mike Mangini—and chronicling the entire process in a documentary titled The Spirit Carries On—and recording a new studio album, A Dramatic Turn of Events, released in September 2011. During the band’s fall tour of the United States, Greg Maki of Live-Metal.net caught up with Rudess backstage at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., to talk about this critical time in Dream Theater history. Dream Theater

Dream Theater has entered uncharted territory. Bands don’t get bigger as they approach their 25th anniversary. But in June, Dream Theater’s latest album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, its 10th studio effort, debuted at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard Top 200. The world’s leading progressive metal band continues to grow and shows no signs of slowing. When the band’s Progressive Nation 2009 tour (also featuring Zappa Plays Zappa, Bigelf, Scale the Summit and, for this show only, Queensryche) came to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., Live Metal’s Greg Maki sat down backstage with drummer Mike Portnoy to discuss the band’s success, the new album, Dream Theater’s classic 1999 release, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scene from a Memory, and more. The house lights went down and the strings of Bernard Hermann’s theme from Psycho signaled the time was near. The sounds of thunder and rain, then a piano followed, with silhouettes of band members visible behind a black curtain. The curtain fell and there was Dream Theater is all its glory. (more…)

Ten studio albums into a career spanning nearly 25 years, Dream Theater is showing no signs of waning musicianship or creativity. In fact, record No. 10, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, their second release for Roadrunner Records, is their most complete effort since 1999’s Metropolis Pt. 2: Scene from a Memory. With six songs topping 75 minutes, it’s easily their most progressive outing since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) while also incorporating the heavy, gothic feel that permeated much of their last album, Systematic Chaos (2007). A ticking metronome.

A voice. Soft, comforting, yet firm, in control.

“Close your eyes and begin to relax.”

A hypnotherapist. He puts his subject under, leads him back through time to find a girl waiting for him.

And so begins Dream Theater’s concept album, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, a tragic yet life-affirming tale of love, betrayal, murder and reincarnation. (more…)
