Live on Mars: Rob Zombie bassist Piggy D.

Bassist, guitarist, songwriter, artist. Matt “Piggy D.” Montgomery is a man of many talents, and those skills led him in 2006 to becoming the bassist for Rob Zombie. With him on board, along with guitarist John 5 and Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, Zombie now has arguably the best band he’s ever had behind him. After soldiering through the summer heat as a co-headliner of the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, Zombie and his band are looking to the special-edition release of Hellbilly Deluxe II in September and an October run, the Halloween Hootenanny Tour, with Alice Cooper. But his credits also include unexpected names like k.d. lang and Meat Loaf. His solo discs feature a heavy dose of country music. John 5’s passion is for the guitar. Just before leaving with Zombie for a co-headlining U.S. tour with Godsmack, John checked in with Greg Maki of Live Metal for a phone interview.

Until about this time last year, it appeared Rob Zombie’s music career was a thing of the past. His first feature film as a director, House of 1000 Corpses, attracted a strong cult following, and he was preparing for the July release of its follow-up, The Devil’s Rejects. Looking for a way to spend the summer of 2005, Zombie decided to assemble a band—longtime bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson, former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5 and drummer Tommy Clufetos—to headline the second stage of Ozzfest. So inspired was he by the stripped-down, back-to-basics shows that he hit the studio last fall with his new band to record his third solo disc, Educated Horses. (more…)
