Predictable?  Never.  Menacing?  Always. Emmure have delivered “A Gift A Curse”, the fourth video from the album Eternal Enemies, available now. Aside from its technical mastery, the futuristic and mind-bending sequences propose the death of art.  From the crumbling of the David Statue and the always enraged lyrics of Emmure, “A Gift A Curse” moves along like an ballistic missile, leaving little time to interpretation. Watch “A Gift A Curse” inside. Queens, New York’s Emmure has been going hard and fast since 2007 and just released its new album, Eternal Enemies, earlier this year. (Victory Records called it Emmure’s “most cohesive, dynamic and utterly violent offering yet.”) Over the years, Emmure’s style of hardcore, death metal and hip-hop has developed an ever-growing rabid fan base, which culminated with them headlining the Victory Records stage on the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Victory also goes on to cite Emmure frontman Frankie Palmeri’s “brutal openness and honesty” as a connection with its fans. However, it’s this same honesty and openness that has made Palmeri one of the more vilified and controversial figures in the metal scene. It’s been a love/hate relationship for Frankie and the metal media over the years, with certain websites hanging on his every word and following his every move. Like it or not, he’s almost reaching a Fred Durst-level of intrigue (minus MTV and the TRL following). So it’s probably no coincidence that when I did this quick interview with him at the Bristow, Va., stop of the Mayhem Festival, we both confessed our admiration for Durst and Limp Bizkit, and touched on the controversy and tabloids that surround him. And he did make some strong statements, some of which are likely to be quoted across the interwebs. But I also found him to be a chill and cool dude. Just face the facts, Emmure is here to stay, and here’s Frankie to tell you about it.

As They Burn: "Lose Yourself in the Music"

As They Burn: “Lose Yourself in the Music”

Paris, France, the romantic capital of the world, would seem like an unlikely place for a burgeoning hardcore and metal scene. At least, it probably isn’t the first place you would look. But one of Victory Records’ newest signees, As They Burn, can confirm there is indeed one and they are its pride and joy. These Parisians just released their hard-hitting new album, Will, Love, Life , and are touring Europe in 2013 on the Bonecrusher Festival with  Job for a Cowboy, Beneath the Massacre and others.

According to the band, they were highly influenced by nu-metal and this is felt on Will, Love, Life with bouncing, heavy, low-end rhythms, molded with violent vocals and breakdowns. Deathcore bands like Emmure and Suicide Silence would be good starting points, but As They Burn’s sound goes a little deeper, commanding the listener’s full attention.

Live Metal’s Jeff Maki caught up with vocalist Kevin Traore, guitarist Fabio Meschini and drummer Milton Bakech to talk about how As They Burn started, the Paris metal scene and the making of Will, Love, Life.

We always talk about keeping the music alive, so here’s your chance to discover a great new band from the unlikeliest of places–read on and listen below! (more…)

Paris, France, the city of fine wine and romance–and hardcore metal in the form of As They Burn, a five-piece (vocalist Kevin Traoré, guitarists Hoby Arinosy and Fabio Meschini, bassist Ronald Pastor and drummer Milton Bakech) that has been earning its chops through the city’s underground hardcore circuit (who knew?). Now comes its Victory Records debut, Will, Love, Life. (more…)

Emmure: "At the top of their game"

Emmure: “At the top of their game”

Starting out playing small venues and rising up in more of the underground punk and hardcore scene, Emmure now is perhaps Victory Records’ biggest band. Combining hardcore, death metal, nu-metal and elements of hip-hop, many critics and fans alike have labeled them “deathcore.” But they seem to attract just as much love as they do hate for their unconventional musical style and “bro” image. But has that slowed them down? Nope. They have released five albums on Victory since 2007, and Speaker of the Dead (2011) and 2012’s Slave to the Game have propelled them from underground status to high-profile metal tours like Metal Hammer’s Trespass America Festival. In summer 2012, Emmure was part of the inaugural tour sharing the stage with Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, God Forbid, Pop Evil and Battlecross.

So what does Emmure think about labels? And what exactly is “the game?” When the tour rolled into Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, Pa., Live Metal caught up with guitarist Jesse Ketive while the band was backstage pumping iron and warming up for their set. (more…)
