The hottest ticket in metal this winter undoubtedly is Lamb of God’s first U.S. headlining tour in support of its latest album, VII: Sturm und Drang, released last summer. The Richmond, Virginia-based band has grown steadily through the years to a point where it could fill the venues it’s playing on this tour on its own. But on this run, it chose to repay an old debt, bringing out Anthrax, which, as vocalist Randy Blythe said onstage, took Lamb of God on tour 12 years ago, becoming the first of the “big four” to take a chance on them. It was a near perfect match, and on this frigid January night, fans of both bands packed the sold-out Fillmore to take in some of the very best in American metal today. (more…)

A Nameless Ghoul of Ghost

Ghost kicked off its “Black to the Future” tour, its first headlining run in support of its recently released third album, Meliora, last night (Sept. 22) to a packed house at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland. At an hour and 40 minutes, with a set list leaning heavily on the new record (eight songs), an acoustic song and a costume change for “new” frontman Papa Emeritus III, it was easily the best Ghost performance I have seen to date, hinting at even bigger things in the future should the band continue its rapid growth. The new version of Stone Temple Pilots, with Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington center stage, replacing the fired Scott Weiland, is a hard sell for some. Others will never accept it, end of story. It’s their loss, because if this show on a Friday night at the sold-out Fillmore Silver Spring is any indication, the band is stronger than it’s been in many years. (more…)
