On the business side, it might be harder for a band to exist now than it ever has been. But in the world of hard rock and metal, that hasn’t stopped countless acts from releasing album after album of quality material. Anyone who says there’s no good music today hasn’t looked past the FM dial. The previous year was one of the strongest in recent memory, highlighted by a number of veteran acts releasing albums that stand up to the best of their impressive back catalogues and newer bands still carving out names for themselves. Here are my favorites of 2016. (more…)

Anthrax

Celebrating 35 years as a band, 2016 is proving to be a very good time for thrash/metal icons Anthrax, and the festivities are intensifying.  First, Anthrax has released the third lyric video from its new album, For All Kings, this one for the track “Zero Tolerance.” The song closes the album and its message is personal and particularly timely in today’s society, with the horrific rise in mass shootings and other forms of terrorism. In the words of Anthrax lyricist Scott Ian, “‘Zero Tolerance’ sums it all up. It’s about doing anything to protect your small circle of family and friends from the insanity of the world.” Watch the video below. (more…)

Anthrax

Weathering multiple lineup changes—including several at the vital position of lead vocalist—and withstanding many seismic shifts in the musical climate, Anthrax has persevered through the decades like few others. In 2011, the band started to reclaim its position at the top of the global metal mountain with the superb Worship Music, its first recording with vocalist Joey Belladonna since 1990. Its 2016 release, the phenomenal For All Kings, has solidified that position, and is a surefire album-of-the-year contender. Anthrax has been on the road supporting it all year, first on a U.S. tour with Lamb of God and, most recently, on a South American run with Iron Maiden. Festivals in the United States and Europe are on the horizon next, with a U.S. headlining tour possible in the fall. Drummer Charlie Benante checked in with Live Metal’s Greg Maki to discuss the new album, his line of coffee (Benante’s Blend) and more. (more…)

Anthrax has blasted into Billboard’s top 10 with its 11th studio album, For All Kings, bowing at No. 9 on the Top 200 Albums Chart and selling 34,000 units.  This debut eclipses the No. 12 debut made ofthe band’s 2011 Grammy-nominated Worship Music.

The album also topped the Hard Rock Albums chart in both the U.S. and Canada with its No. 1 debuts, and landed at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively, on the U.S. and Canada’s Top Current Albums charts. Additionally, For All Kings debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart, No. 2 on the Independent Albums chart, No. 4 Physical Albums and No. 5 Vinyl Albums chart. (more…)

It’s not much of an exaggeration to say Anthrax shocked the metal world in 2011 with Worship Music, its first studio album in eight years and its first with vocalist Joey Belladonna since 1990.

A few years earlier, the band reunited its “classic” lineup (Belladonna, rhythm guitarist Scott Ian, lead guitarist Dan Spitz, bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante). But after a few tours, that experiment fizzled out with only a live album to show for it. Metal fans know the story that followed–the unsuccessful enlistment of a new singer and the back-and-forth flirting with John Bush, who was sent to the sidelines during the reunion, before Belladonna came back full time.

Though the songs on Worship Music were written long before Joey’s return, he was the star of that album, seemingly giving the performance of his life. He clearly took care of himself during his time away from Anthrax, and his voice was stronger and more powerful than it ever was during the band’s 1980s heyday. Combine that with the ever-maturing songwriting of Ian, Benante and Bello, and Worship Music was an instant classic.

How then could Anthrax possibly hope to follow that? (more…)

Lead guitarist Jonathan Donais (Shadows Fall) joined the Anthrax touring lineup in 2013, replacing Rob Caggiano. The band’s latest album, For All Kings, in stores Feb. 26, marks his recording debut with Anthrax.

“I think Jon has brought a great energy to the band,” said bassist Frank Bello. “He stepped up and then some on this record.”

“Jon’s approach towards lead guitar playing, he’s more of a guy who’s looking to construct something that makes sense and helps a song rather than the 45-seconds for him to be showing off how many notes he can play in x-amount of measures,” said  rhythm guitarist Scott Ian.

The hottest ticket in metal this winter undoubtedly is Lamb of God’s first U.S. headlining tour in support of its latest album, VII: Sturm und Drang, released last summer. The Richmond, Virginia-based band has grown steadily through the years to a point where it could fill the venues it’s playing on this tour on its own. But on this run, it chose to repay an old debt, bringing out Anthrax, which, as vocalist Randy Blythe said onstage, took Lamb of God on tour 12 years ago, becoming the first of the “big four” to take a chance on them. It was a near perfect match, and on this frigid January night, fans of both bands packed the sold-out Fillmore to take in some of the very best in American metal today. (more…)
