Instrumental rock music can be a tough sell, even for someone who loves music as much as me. Too often, it comes across as self-indulgent, with endless noodling and shredding. It’s as if the musicians forget the song is what matters most.
Over his eight solo albums, John 5 has avoided that common pitfall, and when John 5 and the Creatures came to the area earlier this month, I jumped at the chance to see them live for the second time in two years. (more…)
Guitarist John 5 has announced the track listing of his upcoming eighth full-length solo album, Season of the Witch. The fully instrumental album, which features his band, The Creatures (bassist Ian Ross and drummer Rodger Carter), is set to hit stores on March 3. The album features experimentation with various genres, including western swing, Spanish flamenco and heavy metal. Pre-orders will become available via iTunes in early February.
John 5 took a different approach with the release of Season of the Witch, choosing to share his new music with fans throughout 2016 by releasing several tracks individually in the form of various music videos. Tracks/videos released include the fast-paced “Black Grass Plague,” downtempo, introspective “Behind the Nut Love,, hard rocking “Now Fear This,” jazz fusion marathon “Here’s to the Crazy Ones” (featuring a bit of “monkeying around”), heavy metal claymation shredfest “Making Monsters” and the whiskey-soaked “Hell Haw.” The videos have garnered nearly a million views, collectively. Sometimes just putting on a concert is a feat worth celebrating.
John 5 was scheduled to bring his solo tour to Hard Times Cafe in Hagerstown, Maryland. But less than a month before the show, the venue, which had seemed from an outside perspective to be growing in prominence in the past year or so as a regional concert destination, abruptly closed its doors. (One of the owners cited years of poor sales as the reason. Read about it here.)
Undeterred, the promoter quickly found a new location for the show, which also featured well-known area acts Silvertung (which just signed a record deal with Pavement Entertainment and has started to make a splash nationally), Small Town Titans and Pain. (more…)
John 5: Killing with kindness
Most music fans know John 5 from his current gig as Rob Zombie’s guitarist or his previous stint filling the same position for Marilyn Manson. But he has worked with a seemingly endless list of musicians and is building an impressive body of work as a solo artist. The Art of Malice, his fifth album of instrumental, guitar-driven music, was released earlier this year. While winding down from Zombie’s co-headlining run on this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival and gearing up for this fall’s Halloween Hootenanny tour with Alice Cooper and the special-edition release of Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe 2 album, John checked in with Live Metal’s Greg Maki. John 5’s resume is as diverse as anyone’s in the music business. Most hard rock and metal fans know about his associations with Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson and, now, Rob Zombie. Some know him as an accomplished solo artist, having released two instrumental albums, Vertigo (2004) and Songs for Sanity (2005). But his credits also include unexpected names like k.d. lang and Meat Loaf. His solo discs feature a heavy dose of country music. John 5’s passion is for the guitar. Just before leaving with Zombie for a co-headlining U.S. tour with Godsmack, John checked in with Greg Maki of Live Metal for a phone interview.
