Howard Jones is the "Devil You Know"

Howard Jones is the “Devil You Know”

During his decade-long run as frontman of Killswitch Engage, Howard Jones took the band to a new level. With the smash 2004 album The End of Heartache (which featured “Rose of Sharyn”), 2006’s As Daylight Dies (featuring the hit “My Curse”) and the unexpected radio hit of its cover version of Dio’s “Holy Diver,” the band was credited with spearheading the rise of metalcore and had become a household name. Then, in 2010, on a winter tour with The Devil Wears Prada and Dark Tranquillity, Jones unexpectedly had to sit out, with All That Remains vocalist Phil Labonte and former Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach filling in. At the time, there was much speculation and rumors were flying about the reason for Jones’ absence (he got a girl pregnant, back injury, other health issues). Time passed and with little or no word as to what was happening with Killswitch Engage’s lineup, the band announced in 2012 what fans had been expecting: Howard Jones was out, and eventually, he was replaced full-time by Leach. But why was he out?  (more…)

kse-disarmReview by Greg Maki
“The Hell in Me” comes screaming out of the gate to kick off Disarm the Descent, the sixth studio album by Killswitch Engage and its first with original frontman Jesse Leach since 2002’s landmark Alive or Just Breathing. Like most of the disc’s dozen tracks, it’s a short song (only two top four minutes), yet the band packs so much into it that it takes the listener on a real journey with peaks and valleys, and changes in mood and tone. The songs will sound familiar to any who has heard Killswitch before—that blend of Euro-style metal and American hardcore that so many others have tried to replicate—yet there is a passion, energy and urgency powering the music that their peers, for the most part, lack. It’s an elusive quality that even Killswitch couldn’t fully capture on its previous effort, 2009’s self-titled album. (more…)

Jesse Leach, left, and Adam Dutkiewicz of Times of Grace

Jesse Leach, left, and Adam Dutkiewicz of Times of Grace

It’s hard to remember a new band that set the metal world aflutter the way Times of Grace has in early 2011. The reason: The act teams Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz with his band’s original singer, Jesse Leach (who spent the better part of the past decade in Seemless and now fronts The Empire Shall Fall), for the first time since Alive or Just Breathing, the landmark Killswitch album released in 2002. The Times of Grace debut, The Hymn of a Broken Man, released Jan. 18, 2011, shows Leach and Dutkiewicz’s creative partnership is stronger than ever. The band recently kicked off its first tour in Baltimore, and before the show, Leach talked to Live Metal’s Greg Maki about all things Times of Grace. (more…)
