Metal and Hard Rock Musicians pick their favorite Halloween songs for the season

Metal and horror go hand in hand. Since its inception, heavy metal has invoked themes of horror and the occult, starting with the legends themselves, Black Sabbath. Through the years, we’ve seen many legendary rock, metal and punk bands embrace horror, as well, such as the Misfits, Alice Cooper, King Diamond, Helloween, and arguably the most popular Halloween-themed band of all-time, Type O Negative. So we figured why not ask the burning question to a whole bunch of rock and metal bands: “What is your favorite Halloween song of all-time?” What we got in response was a bag of trick and treats so big, including the bands I mentioned above and a lot more. Happy Halloween! View the list inside. (more…)

Long a seasoned veteran of heavy metal concerts, some time ago I reached a point where it was harder to determine which bands I hadn’t seen perform live than the ones I had. My first show was Ozzy Osbourne in 1988, and my most recent was this year’s installment of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. In between, I’ve seen most of the prominent metal bands of the past three decades: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Sepultura, White and Rob Zombie, Korn, Slipknot and many more. Then there’s the legends like Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Alice Cooper and Dio, all of which I’ve seen, as well. But one had stood out, missing from my—what I think is an impressive—list throughout the years—King Diamond. So when he was announced as a main stage act as part of this year’s Mayhem Festival, alongside Slayer, Hellyeah and The Devil Wears Prada, I thought it might be now or never. (more…)

King Diamond has confirmed what has been rumored for several weeks: a full North American tour this Fall! The long-awaited trek will commence on October 11th in Atlanta and wrap up with the previously announced performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. A limited edition King Diamond jacket will be available through the  SHOWstubs.com fan club presale, which begins tomorrow, June 24th. Tickets will be on sale online and at box offices nationwide on Friday, June 27th.

My personal introduction to King Diamond came through the music video for the track, “Sleepless Nights,” from the Conspiracy album, which aired on the 1989 Halloween edition of MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. At this point in time, the then-former Mercyful Fate vocalist already had released four albums under his own moniker. He has remained a huge influence for black and extreme metal bands (along with being acknowledged by the likes of Metallica) and there have always been many questions regarding King and his beliefs.

In all my years of attending live shows, King Diamond is surprisingly absent. It won’t be anymore. Look out for live coverage of King Diamond on 10/13/2014 at The Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD., as this is one we don’t want to miss. (more…)

This entry is part 6 of 11 in the series The Top 10 Headbanger's Ball Breakthrough Bands

6. King Diamond – “Sleepless Nights”

From 1980 to 1984, vocalist King Diamond fronted Mercyful Fate, the Danish band largely credited as being one of the original black metal pioneers. In 1985, he started a solo career, and when I first saw the video of “Sleepless Nights” (Conspiracy) on a 1989 Halloween edition of Headbanger’s Ball, he already had released four albums under his own moniker. I remember a friend telling me at that time that he thought King sounded a bit like Ozzy Osbourne. Sure, if Ozzy sang in falsetto, played thrash metal and scared the living bejesus out of you.

The Volbeat frontman talks touring, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies and more

2013 has been the year of Volbeat in America. Songs such as “Still Counting” and “Heaven nor Hell” still were burning up the airwaves years after their initial release even as the band’s fifth studio album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, hit stores in April. A heavy touring schedule, including prominent billing on many of the biggest festivals, solidified their place in the top tier of hard rock/metal bands here. Late summer/early fall saw them headlining perhaps their biggest U.S. tour yet, Rock Allegiance, with support from HIM, All That Remains and Airbourne. As the trek neared its end and came to the Mann Center for the Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia, Pa., Live Metal’s Greg Maki sat down backstage with vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen to get the latest on Volbeat. The Outlaw Torn: An interview with Michael Poulsen of Volbeat

Right now, arguably the hottest hard rock/metal band in America is from Denmark. Behind hit singles “A Warrior’s Call,” “Still Counting” and “Heaven nor Hell,” Volbeat has rocketed to stardom here in the past couple years, routinely selling out shows and seeing their latest album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200. When their headlining tour recently brought them to Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Md., Live Metal’s Greg Maki caught up with vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen to discuss the new record, touring, King Diamond, sleep paralysis, finding the unique Volbeat sound and more.
