John 5

Guitarist John 5 has announced the track listing of his upcoming eighth full-length solo album, Season of the Witch. The fully instrumental album, which features his band, The Creatures (bassist Ian Ross and drummer Rodger Carter), is set to hit stores on March 3. The album features experimentation with various genres, including western swing, Spanish flamenco and heavy metal. Pre-orders will become available via iTunes in early February.

John 5 took a different approach with the release of Season of the Witch, choosing to share his new music with fans throughout 2016 by releasing several tracks individually in the form of various music videos. Tracks/videos released include the fast-paced “Black Grass Plague,” downtempo, introspective “Behind the Nut Love,, hard rocking “Now Fear This,” jazz fusion marathon “Here’s to the Crazy Ones” (featuring a bit of “monkeying around”), heavy metal claymation shredfest “Making Monsters” and the whiskey-soaked “Hell Haw.” The videos have garnered nearly a million views, collectively. Another year has come and gone, and in my opinion, 2015 was one of the strongest in recent memory in terms of quality hard rock and metal releases. My top 10 list includes bands on the rise, veteran acts reinventing themselves and a farewell to one of the most iconic figures in rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t expect everyone to agree with my picks, but you don’t have to. It’s my list, not yours. (more…)

I don’t know how, but each year, Rock on the Range, the best music festival I’ve ever attended, gets better. The lineup largely features acts from the same pool of bands playing all the festivals throughout the “World’s Loudest Month,” but the atmosphere here is different. Everyone knows this is the big one, and if you want to make a splash, this is the place to do it, whether you’re a headliner, a new face that’s won a battle of the bands to get here or a new band of familiar faces making its world premiere. After 20-plus years of fame and even more infamy, Marilyn Manson has arrived at perhaps the most interesting point of his career yet. “That P.T. Barnum aspect of Marilyn Manson has sort of evaporated,” he told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. So what does that leave?

It is a question with which Manson seemingly has been struggling for several years now (bottoming out with 2009’s The High End of Low), his apparent boredom with being Marilyn Manson mirroring the vast majority of the public’s disinterest in his music and his latest antics. Born Villain (2012) saw him rekindle some of his past self—artistically, though it made barely a ripple in the pop culture consciousness.

So now, at 46, on his ninth studio album, The Pale Emperor, Manson at long last has started to reveal that beneath the makeup, and years of controversy and outrageous rumors, there is a man—a man who still has some strong opinions (particularly when it comes to America’s gun culture) and a wicked sense of humor, but also one who has started to chip away at the walls he’s built around himself.
