Jungle Rot

At this year’s installment of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia, we had the opportunity to talk with Jungle Rot’s Dave Matrise. While Jungle Rot may be a name new to Live Metal, the band isn’t new at all. The Wisconsin “old-school” death metallers have been at it for over 20 years, and just released their eighth album, Order Shall Prevail (June 30, 2015, Victory Records). If you’re a fan of the early days of fast, violent death metal in the vein of the first Sepultura albums, Deicide or Immolation and others in this vein, check out Jungle Rot. Playing its first Mayhem Festival on the Victory Records Stage, Jungle Rot was one of the standouts of the day.

Unless you’re a metal fan living under a rock, you’ve probably hears about the recent controversy surrounding this year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Jeff Maki of Live chatted with Dave, who offered some candid remarks about Slayer’s Kerry King, and discussed this year’s Mayhem Festival lineup and more.

New Jersey’s Ill Nino burst on the scene in the early 2000s with its unique style of Latin-infused metal and joined bands like Incubus, hed (P.E.), Soulfly and others in the second tier of the burgeoning American nu-metal scene. With hit albums like its debut,
Revolution Revolución (2001) and Confession (2003), and the rock radio singles “What Comes Around” and “How Can I Live,”  Ill Nino shortly thereafter disappeared after its five-year run. Or did they? After a couple more albums —2005’s One Nation Underground and 2008’s Enigma (which up until now I wasn’t even aware existed)—Ill Nino resurfaced on Chicago-based hardcore, punk and metal label Victory Records. After releasing Dead New World in 2010 and Epidemia in 2012 (again, both of which I was unaware), according to the band, they believe they have released one of its best yet in Till Death, La Familia (July 22, 2014). But the band says, “Don’t call it a comeback, they’ve been here for years.” That may be the case, but now we have living proof with Ill Nino playing the first-ever Victory Records stage on the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, a showcase alongside labelmates, Erimha, Wretched, Islander and Emmure. It was at the Bristow, Va., stop of the tour at Jiffy Lube Live where I caught up with longtime bassist Laz Pina and its rhythm guitarist since 2006, Diego Verduzco. We talked about the band’s experience on Mayhem Festival, Ill Nino’s fan base, the band’s alleged existence since 2003 and a little more.

Of course, I’m joking. It’s good to see Ill Nino once again in the spotlight and releasing an excellent new album. Welcome back. (more…)

We told you about Body Count’s Friday, June 13th, 2014 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in our recent editorial, “On with the Body Count” (read) and now video footage of the metal band fronted by hip-hop legend, actor and director Ice-T, performing the song “Enter The Dark Side” can be seen below. Body Count is the first metal band to perform on this version of the late night talk show. I happened to tune in just in time to watch the performance, where at the conclusion, Fallon exclaims to Ice-T, “That’s how you do it!” Watch the video inside: (more…)

Cleveland, Ohio’s nine man freakshow, Mushroomhead have released its official video of the track “Qwerty,” the first from their new album, The Righteous & the Butterfly (May 13, Megaforce Records), which also marks the return of vocalist J Mann to the band. The video itself is a disturbing trip into the mind and visual art of Mushroomhead that could best be described as Poltergeist set in a demented funhouse. It doesn’t hurt that “Qwerty” is a rather unique song, as well. In case you missed it, check out our interview with did with J Mann himself, where he talks about his return and the making of the new record (read here). And watch the video inside: (more…)
