One of the most anticipated metal tours of the spring–dubbed the “Killthrax” tour–brought together bands–and fans–of different eras. On one hand, there was Anthrax, one of the “big four” of thrash and possessing a history of more than 35 years. On the other, there was Killswitch Engage, one of the pioneers and leaders of metalcore, but also with a lengthening history of its own–its seminal, subgenre-defining album, Alive or Just Breathing, turns 15 this year. It’s all metal in the end, though, and ultimately the bill, which also featured The Devil Wears Prada and Jasta, was a testament to how this powerful, empowering, often misunderstood style of music has shifted and endured through the years. Anders Fridén of In Flames

Legendary melodic metal act In Flames announce the release of their twelfth full-length studio album Battles, out November 11 via Eleven Seven Music in the North America and Nuclear Blast globally excluding North America. Recorded in Los Angeles, the 15-track album sees the band taking a new approach while staying true to their vision and encompassing their unique, signature sound. In Flames brought in Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson (Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance, The Used) as a collaborator on Battles, creating an album that speaks to all In Flames fans alike.

“I think being in California really affected this album in the sense that we had a studio in the house that we were staying at and the vibe was really relaxed which lent itself to productivity,” says vocalist Anders Fridén. “It really helped having a producer who could make us focus on what we needed to accomplish and keep us on track,” he adds. “This was a very new approach for us because we’ve never let anyone else in the way we did with Howard,” says guitarist Björn Gelotte.

Confidence and palpable excitement is dripping all over Battles. The instantly infectious “take the power back” anthem “The Truth,” will hit radio airwaves this Friday, but fans can get a first taste of the new album with the unveiling of new track “The End” off the upcoming album. It will be available via streaming partners starting tomorrow 8/26.  (more…)

I remember Walls of Jericho being part of the second or third tier of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal bands in the mid-2000s. The band even got a coveted slot on Ozzfest 2006. Though it is from Detroit, the band’s hardcore/metalcore style had it lumped in with the rest of this pack. Vocalist Candace Kucsulain was on a short list of females fronting hardcore bands and still is to this day.

No One Can Save You from Yourself is the band’s first release since 2008, the members passing their time pursuing other ventures. I had all but forgot about Walls of Jericho. (more…)

Tommy Sciro, left, and Joey Simpson of Kissing Candice

Molding an array of styles on its Victory Records debut album, Blind Until We Burn, Kissing Candice spent the summer promoting it by playing the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival’s Victory Records Stage. This year’s installment of the festival has been mired in controversy, started by festival co-founder Kevin Lyman and further stoked by Kerry King of Slayer, the festival’s headliner. Victory Records artists didn’t take too kindly to King calling the Victory Stage a “piece of shit record stage,” and as you may already have seen, Jungle Rot, Sister Sin and Kissing Candice all responded to King right here on Live Metal (Read here). Here is the interview we conducted with Kissing Candice in which the comments originated, along with the band discussing its diverse music style and fan base. (more…)
