“The Hell in Me” comes screaming out of the gate to kick off Disarm the Descent, the sixth studio album by Killswitch Engage and its first with original frontman Jesse Leach since 2002’s landmark Alive or Just Breathing. Like most of the disc’s dozen tracks, it’s a short song (only two top four minutes), yet the band packs so much into it that it takes the listener on a real journey with peaks and valleys, and changes in mood and tone. The songs will sound familiar to any who has heard Killswitch before—that blend of Euro-style metal and American hardcore that so many others have tried to replicate—yet there is a passion, energy and urgency powering the music that their peers, for the most part, lack. On their fifth studio album (the third with vocalist Howard Jones and second to be self-titled), Killswitch Engage knows what they do well and rarely deviates from it: Relentlessly pummeling verses, taking their cues from both hardcore and classic metal, lead to choruses powered by swelling vocal melodies. Such a simple description, though, seems to belittle a band that has become one of the leading forces in American heavy music. (more…)

Killswitch Engage

How do you spend your summer when you’re one of the biggest American metal bands? Why, you join a festival tour known for showcasing punk rock, of course. The unorthodox move has paid off, as metalheads have followed Killswitch Engage to the Warped Tour. Those who caught one of the early dates saw the brief return of Killswitch guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz to the stage before his lingering back troubles forced him to depart and the band to continue as a four-piece. At the tour’s stop at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., Live Metal’s Greg Maki caught up with Killswitch Engage bassist Mike D’Antonio to discuss the Warped Tour, the special edition release of their latest album (available Aug. 28, 2007), post-Warped Tour plans and more.
