Battlebeast—how can that name not bring a smile to a metalhead’s face? The Finnish band combines power metal and traditional ’80s metal into something special: anthemic songs with big hooks and choruses to bring out that inner headbanger in us all. Formed in 2008 and originally featuring vocalist Nitte Valo, the band was left in a compromising position in 2012 when she had to leave the band prior to a coveted opening slot on a tour with Sonata Arctica. In stepped the wild-haired, big voice of a frontwoman, Noora Louhimo, who up until this point had never performed in a heavy metal band. Well, Noora (or as she had me pronounce it, New-rrr-a, with an emphasis on the tongue roll) now has become the heart and soul of Battlebeast, as the band prepares to release its third album with her as vocalist, Bringer of Pain (Feb. 17, 2017, Nuclear Blast Records). The band—rounded out by bassist/vocalist Eero Sipilä, drummer Pyry Vikki, guitarist Juuso Soinio, keyboardist Janne Björkroth and his brother, guitarist Joona Björkroth—will serve as openers, along with Leave’s Eyes, for Sabaton on a U.S. tour this spring. Overkill

From the first time I heard the thrash metal anthem “Hello from the Gutter,” off of the 1988 album Under the Influence, I was hooked on Overkill. Then came “Elimination” and “Time to Kill” and “Horrorscope,” and you get the idea. The New Jersey band formed at the same time as other bands in the United States, from coast to coast, and around the world, were creating the new, chaotic subgenre devoid of rules and against the grain of what was considered heavy metal at the time. It would come to be known as thrash metal. With a notable winged-skull mascot named “Chaly,” and releases like The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope (1991) and I Hear Black (1993), the band was a regular on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball, toured and became known all over the world. There’s even a strong sentiment among fans and metal purists that the “Big Four” should be expanded to include the likes of Overkill, Testament, Exodus, and others. Yes, Overkill is that important, and, in other words, they can be considered living legends. Throughout the turbulent metal scene in the ’90s, the band continued to crank out albums, and kept going strong in the 2000s.

That leads us to the present, when Overkill is about to release its 18th album. The Grinding Wheel is as heavy as it is diverse and dangerously fun. Members have come and gone, but the instantly recognizable voice of the band, Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, remains. Florida death metal legends Obituary return with their self-titled, 10th studio album, further cementing their legacy as one of the most important metal bands of all time!

Life Of Agony

Reactivated Brooklyn hard rock legends Life Of Agony are hard at work on their new album and Napalm Records debut A Place Where There’s No More Pain.  Today the band has confirmed an April 28th release date and have debuted the album’s artwork.  The track listing along with pre-order options will be made available soon.

“We’re in the final stages of mixing the album with our producer and then we head into mastering sessions with Ted Jensen (Alice in Chains, Machine Head, Deftones) at Sterling Sound, NYC. Suicide Silence

The wait is finally over, as Suicide Silence have triumphantly returned with their truly career defining moment in the form of their self-titled new, full-length album set for a Feb 24th release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Here’s what vocalist Eddie Hermida told us about the album in an interview (read the full interview here) we did with him prior to recording:

We’re looking to burn bridges, man. We’re looking for kids to either sink or swim with us. If you’re at all hesitant about our band, if you don’t get our motives and if you don’t get our position in the world and you don’t get where our music comes from, then you’re gonna be one of those fans that gets left behind. It’s one of those things where this next future, this next road for us is gonna be something that is really gonna put us to the test for ourselves more than anybody else. It’s almost one of those things where it might even completely bomb, and we don’t care. It’s one of those things where we’re literally at a point that we’re not allowed to not take chances anymore. We’re not allowed to play the safe road anymore.

So Eddie holds nothing back here, saying that this album will be way different. And yes, “Doris” does have clean vocals and the signature Ross Robinson production, but the core Suicide Silence sound is still intact. Check out the video and more comments from the band inside. (more…)

There was a turning point in the evolution of In Flames’ sound in the early 2000s. Fans cite either 2002’s Reroute to Remain, (which featured more clean singing, melody and even a borderline country music song) or 2004’s Soundtrack to Your Escape (an industrial metal album, which, at the time, was its most commercial-sounding release to date) as the albums that “abandoned” the band’s signature melodeath sound. Come Clarity (2006), A Sense of Purpose (2008) and Sounds of a Playground Fading (2011) rode the fine line of heaviness and accessibility, and even yielded some new fan favorites along the way. Then came Siren Charms (2014,) and for many of the fans still left, this was the final nail in the coffin. I’ve been a fan of most of In Flames’ post-melodeath era albums, even Siren Charms. The album had a somber mood and explosive parts throughout. But now with In Flames’ 12th studio album, Battles, and yet more drastic changes in sound and personnel, will they be able to retain me as a fan? (more…)

Lamb Of God

When Lamb of God recorded last year’s VII: Sturm und Drang, they held onto a song they felt was special enough to stand on its own: “The Duke.” The track, which finds frontman Randy Blythe singing about mortality, is dedicated to Wayne Ford, a fan of the band whom the singer befriended in late 2012. Ford was suffering from leukemia and after Blythe heard his story – captured on the band’s website – it left a profound impact on him.

To honor Ford, the group is releasing an EP, also titled The Duke, which features the hard-rock–leaning song along with another unreleased track that dates back to their Wrath LP, the thrashy, heavy “Culling,” which they finished up especially for this EP, along with live recordings of three Sturm und Drangtracks. Amaranthe

Amaranthe have dropped the video for their latest single “That Song” from their epic and gloriously over-the-top new album Maximalism.

The record is out October 21 on Spinefarm Records and finds the band further expanding its pop x metal hybrid style. The album is full of songs so catchy that they embed themselves in your brain for hours and “That Song” is easily one of the most memorable Amaranthe songs to date.

The clip mixes a gripping narrative and performance footage. It finds the members of the band playing a variety of roles, as musicians in blue collar gigs at the crossroads in their lives. It offers frenetic, high energy visuals. Watch it inside now! (more…)

Testament-band-2016

Testament

Legendary bay area thrash metal giants Testament have released the title track for their upcoming 12th album, Brotherhood Of The Snake, which will be released on October 28, 2016 via Nuclear Blast. Recently, we had the chance to chat with vocalist Chuck Billy about the new album. In the soon-to-be-posted interview, Chuck further elaborated on his recent comments that “he didn’t have fun making the album,” (read here) saying that the recording process was “something the band just maybe had to go through,” even at this stage in its career. He also described his vocal style on the album as similar to the band’s classic album, Practice What You Preach, and its previous effort, 2012’s Dark Roots of the Earth.

We also discussed more details about the album, including its theme and individual songs. Look out for the interview in its entirety in the near future, but for now, watch the lyric video for Brotherhood Of The Snake inside:

Metallica-pandora-stream
Metallica’s recent Aug. 20th gig in Minneapolis, Minnesota celebrated the opening of city’s U.S. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Minnesota Vikings. Pandora live-streamed the show, which was opened by Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat for the stadium’s inaugural rock concert. U.S. Bank Stadium holds a massive 70,000 people and the concert was completely sold out. Well, if you missed the stream, Pandora is giving fans the chance to stream the entire live show for free at this location. The band’s set-list included the classics, “Creeping Death” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” later cuts like “The Memory Remains” and Metallica’s brand new song, “Hardwired” from its upcoming November 18th album, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct.
