On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, with both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton ending their campaigns here, Nov. 7 was a momentous day in Raleigh, North Carolina. But for a couple thousand people at the Ritz, a concert venue located in an industrial park just outside the city’s downtown, politics took a back seat. Differences were tossed aside as the assembled masses all partook in the ritual of Ghost.

The Swedish occult rockers have rocketed to worldwide stardom, winning a Grammy Award along the way and inspiring some of the most devoted fans any band can claim today. Everyone at the show seemingly wore a Ghost T-shirt or stood in line at the merch table to purchase one. Many came in costumes inspired by the demonic papal figure Papa Emeritus III and the masked Nameless Ghouls who provide the instrumentation behind him.

The band’s North American “Popestar” tour is its biggest production here to date, with a tiered stage and elaborate backdrop fit for an arena. At the rate they’ve been growing their fan base and with performances as strong and dynamic as this one, Papa and the ghouls could find themselves in venues that size before long. (more…)

A Nameless Ghoul of Ghost

Ghost kicked off its “Black to the Future” tour, its first headlining run in support of its recently released third album, Meliora, last night (Sept. 22) to a packed house at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland. At an hour and 40 minutes, with a set list leaning heavily on the new record (eight songs), an acoustic song and a costume change for “new” frontman Papa Emeritus III, it was easily the best Ghost performance I have seen to date, hinting at even bigger things in the future should the band continue its rapid growth. We’ll have more soon, but for now, check out the set list and a few preview images. (more…)

The smell of burning incense filled the air. Blue light illuminated the fog-filled stage, behind which rested a cloth backdrop depicting the inside of a church. But this was no holy affair. One by one, five black-robed, masked figures took their places—drums, keyboards, bass, two guitars. The voices of a choir, pre-recorded, came forth before the Nameless Ghouls onstage put their weapons to work. The service of Ghost had begun.

As the title track of the band’s newly released second album, Infestissumam, segued into “Per Aspera Ad Inferi,” the face of Ghost emerged from the fog: Papa Emeritus II, appearing as a demonic pope, brandishing a staff, his face painted into the visage of a skull, his countenance at odds with the smooth, melodic tones of his voice. The sizable Monday-night crowd responded with maximum fervor; all had come for a singular purpose: to worship at this unholy church of rock ‘n’ roll. (more…)
