Can we end the debate now? Rock ‘n’ roll will never die. Metal will never die. Didn’t anybody listen to Neil Young? Didn’t anybody listen to Ronnie James Dio? If that isn’t enough, I have further proof in the 26,000 fans who attended the sold-out 2015 Rock Allegiance festival at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Featuring living legends Rob Zombie, Korn and Godsmack, current rock bands carrying the torch like Five Finger Death Punch and Bring Me the Horizon, along with a lineup of other mainstays and up-and-coming bands, Rock Allegiance was a nonstop day celebrating rock and metal. The most important thing an opening act can bring to the stage is energy; even if your music is terrible, you at least can keep the audience occupied for the 30 minutes they must spend with you. Well, Islander’s music, which draws from both nu metal and hard rock, isn’t terrible, and the Greenville, South Carolina, band’s energy could not be contained by the limited stage space; frontman Mikey Carvajal made one of several trips into the crowd at the start of the second song. Since launching in 2010 with Shinedown as the headliner, Carnival of Madness has continued in subsequent years (with Alter Bridge and Theory of a Deadman in 2011, and Evanescence leading the bill in 2012). But it wasn’t the same, lacking the “event” status Shinedown brought to it.
