God Forbid "Return to form"

God Forbid “Return to form”

That is what many fans are saying about God Forbid’s latest album, Equilibrium. After 2009’s more experimental Earthsblood, the band has returned to more of the sound of Gone Forever (2004) and IV: Constitution of Treason (2005). Now on a new label, Victory Records, and moving on from guitarist Doc Coyle’s brother Dallas’ departure from the band in 2009, God Forbid seems like it is out to prove something and reestablish itself as one of the leaders of modern metal. And they’re not wasting any time, having spent the summer touring the United States on Metal Hammer’s Trespass America Festival, sharing the stage with Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil and Battlecross.

Live Metal has a little history with God Forbid, first interviewing vocalist Byron Davis in 2006 and then Doc Coyle on the 2009 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Now, in 2012, we had a quick chat with the newest member of the band, guitarist Matt Wicklund, at the Trespass Festival’s stop at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, Pa. (more…)

Emmure: "At the top of their game"

Emmure: “At the top of their game”

Starting out playing small venues and rising up in more of the underground punk and hardcore scene, Emmure now is perhaps Victory Records’ biggest band. Combining hardcore, death metal, nu-metal and elements of hip-hop, many critics and fans alike have labeled them “deathcore.” But they seem to attract just as much love as they do hate for their unconventional musical style and “bro” image. But has that slowed them down? Nope. They have released five albums on Victory since 2007, and Speaker of the Dead (2011) and 2012’s Slave to the Game have propelled them from underground status to high-profile metal tours like Metal Hammer’s Trespass America Festival. In summer 2012, Emmure was part of the inaugural tour sharing the stage with Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, God Forbid, Pop Evil and Battlecross.

So what does Emmure think about labels? And what exactly is “the game?” When the tour rolled into Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, Pa., Live Metal caught up with guitarist Jesse Ketive while the band was backstage pumping iron and warming up for their set. (more…)
