With four bands from four different countries, Children of Bodom’s I Worship Chaos tour was an international affair. Even better, each act brought a very different sound to the stage, making for a pleasantly diverse night of metal in Baltimore.

The progressive metal stylings of Oni, from Canada, kicked off the evening. This is an interesting, talented band that hasn’t quite put it all together yet, but it was fun watching them as they’re figuring out how the pieces fit. Guitarists Martin Andres and Brandon White each can shred with the best of them, and the band’s secret weapon is John “D” on the xylosynth, a sort of electric xylophone that hasn’t been used in metal before. Vocalist Jake Oni’s clean singing complemented the music better than his barks and growls, but this definitely is a band to keep an eye on as it matures. (more…)

Washington, D.C.-based prog innovators Periphery will return this summer with a new album, Periphery III: Select Difficulty (July 22, Sumerian Records), and a U.S. tour, dubbed the “Sonic Unrest” tour, launching Aug. 4.

Periphery III: Select Difficulty is finally complete and we’re extremely excited to show everyone,” said guitarist Jake Bowen. “For the past couple of years, we’ve been refining our collaborative process as a band, and we feel that it’s only getting better with the completion of this album. We spent two months writing songs that are not only representative of the Periphery sound but also reflect where all of us are as musicians. Working together has helped us tread new ground musically and creatively. In support of Periphery III, you’ll see us hit the road in the States this summer with SikTh, Chon and Toothgrinder on the ‘Sonic Unrest’ tour. It’s going to be a blast! See you on the road!” (more…)

Recently dubbed “the #1 metal band you should be listening to” by VH1 (read here), New Jersey’s Toothgrinder’s progressive hardcore-metal has been compared to the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan. But for me, it’s more like early Mudvayne. Schizophrenic Jubilee has strong elements of song hidden within the “schizophrenic” assault, ready to break through the walls and make Toothgrinder a true player in today’s metal scene.
