It seems like Godsmack has spent the past several years trying to get away from the identity it forged over the course of its first three albums. An acoustic EP, The Other Side, released in 2004, showed the band in an entirely different light. Their last full-length release, IV (2006), featured new sounds like harmonica and some, moodier, blues-based numbers. After touring in support of IV, the band went on hiatus. Guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin hooked up with former Ugly Kid Joe vocalist Whitfield Crane to form Another Animal, while frontman Sully Erna worked on solo material (yet to be released) and wrote his autobiography (The Paths We Choose, 2007). It’s not a secret that Sully Erna is the driving force behind Godsmack. He’s the singer, songwriter, producer, and occasional guitarist and drummer. But while he tended to personal matters prior to the recording of the band’s 2006 release, IV, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin took a more active role in the creative process and ended up sharing the writing credit on four songs. The real product of their collaborations, however, comes to us in the form of Another Animal, which also features original Godsmack guitarist Lee Richards and former Ugly Kid Joe frontman Whitfield Crane.
