September Mourning

The dark alternative, hard rock transmedia project September Mourning has released its official music video for “20 Below,” from its debut full-length album, Volume II, which is out now on Sumerian Records. “20 Below” follows the continuing story of human-reaper hybrid September through parallel story lines as she is pursued between two worlds.

“’20 Below’ is about ending the cycle of abuse within our own lives, whether it’s self inflicted or from an outside source,” September said. “We’ve all had those relationships where someone has gotten close to us, abuses us in some way … knocks us down so hard it diminishes our self-esteem. Another year has come and gone, and in my opinion, 2015 was one of the strongest in recent memory in terms of quality hard rock and metal releases. My top 10 list includes bands on the rise, veteran acts reinventing themselves and a farewell to one of the most iconic figures in rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t expect everyone to agree with my picks, but you don’t have to. It’s my list, not yours. (more…)

Maybe the biggest compliment I can pay September Mourning’s Volume I actually carries the tone of a criticism–it’s too short!

The six-track EP serves as a thrilling introduction to the world of September Mourning, and I say “world” because this is much more than a band. It’s a multimedia musical, theatrical art project with characters (portrayed by the band members) and a storyline. September herself told us about it in an interview earlier this year: (more…)

Theatricality long has been a part of rock music, from KISS and Alice Cooper to Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson to newer acts such as In This Moment. September Mourning takes it a step further, with a stage show that is literally a comic book brought to life. The band has made some major strides recently, with performances at Rock on the Range in May (view our photos here) and the Download Festival in June, and there’s much more in store in the coming months. Live Metal’s Greg Maki recently caught up with September’s more human side to discuss this multimedia project. (more…)

11:45 a.m., Jagermeister Stage — SANTA CRUZ
The final day of a festival is always slow and sluggish, usually until late afternoon or so, but Santa Cruz, a Finnish band that mixes ‘80s glam metal sensibilities with a more modern attitude, does its best to wake up the early-arrivers. They have my attention, becoming my first “find” of the weekend. (more…)
