Alter Bridge

Since forming in 2004, Alter Bridge has seen its stock steadily rise in the hard rock realm, its prominence emphasized by a full-fledged arena tour of Europe to close out 2016. On Jan. 20, the band–vocalist/guitarist Myles Kennedy, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips–will kick off its first North American headlining tour in support of its latest album (see dates below), the superb 2016 release The Last Hero. Though the album is Alter Bridge’s first since 2013, the band members haven’t taken much time off. Kennedy fronts Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s solo band and has been working on his own solo material; Tremonti leads his eponymous, speed metal-influenced band; and Phillips hits the skins for Projected, featuring members of Sevendust and Tremonti’s band. Live Metal’s Greg Maki recently caught up with Kennedy to discuss the new album, tour and more. (more…)

1991_GunsNRoses-UseYourIllusionsOn this date in history, Sept. 17, 1991, Guns N’ Roses released Use You Illusion I and Use You Illusion II, its last studio albums to this date featuring original members Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, Slash and Izzy Stradlin (drummer Matt Sorum already had replaced Steven Adler for the recordings). With media outlets recently reporting Slash and Axl are speaking once again, the nonstop chatter of a reunion has picked up yet again. Will it ever happen? It will take millions and millions of dollars and an office building full of attorneys, but, yes, I think it eventually will happen. But first, let’s look back at those classic albums from GNR. Thanks to Gene Simmons, “rock is dead” has dominated much of the conversation since last fall. I guess Slash, Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators didn’t get that memo. This midweek show at a sold-out Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Maryland, further cemented them as one of the top touring rock bands in the world today. (more…)

In its fifth year, Carolina Rebellion, held on a open field outside Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, was bigger than ever this year. The addition of a fourth stage brought the total number of bands over the two days to 39 and also spread out the festival over an almost excessively large space, driving the two main stages about a half-mile apart. This growth led to more attendees than ever before, too, with the crowd at the sold-out event reaching 40,000 on each day (based on an initial estimate of a total combined attendance of 80,000, provided by the festival’s publicist). Time to look back on another year that was in hard rock and metal. I don’t expect everyone—especially not a lot of very vocal online metal fans—to agree with what you’re about to read, but isn’t that part of what makes this sort of thing so much fun? I veer toward the hard rock side of metal, mostly staying away from the more extreme varieties (I’m sure my brother, Jeff, will cover some of that on his list), and I’m not claiming these are the best albums of 2014, end of discussion. No, these are simply the releases I enjoyed the most and have found myself going back to over and over this year. And oh yeah, rock is not dead. (more…)
