Godsmack frontman talks Mass Chaos tour and more

After more than a decade at top of the hard rock/metal heap, Godsmack still is going strong. Its most recent release, The Oracle (2010), was another solid addition to its catalog, while its live show remains one of the best in the business. This spring will celebrate that aspect of the band, with the release of its first live album, Live and Inspired (accompanied by four newly recorded cover songs), and co-headlining the Mass Chaos tour with Staind, with support from Halestorm. Frontman Sully Erna recently participated in a teleconference with journalists to discuss the tour and more. (more…)

Good vibrations: Sully Erna and the mystery of music

Most know Sully Erna as the frontman of Godsmack, writer and singer of anger-fueled songs like “Whatever,” “Awake” and “Cryin’ Like a Bitch.” But there is another side to the Lawrence, Mass., native hinted at by “Voodoo” and “Serenity” but not fully explored until Avalon, his debut solo album released in September 2010. While on tour promoting the release, Sully called in to Live Metal’s Greg Maki to discuss Avalon, his understanding of the basic nature of music, Godsmack’s upcoming run on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, his future in music and more. Sully_Erna_-_Avalon_CoverReview by Greg Maki
It’s a good time to be a Godsmack fan. In May, the band released The Oracle, its best album in nearly a decade, and after playing a handful of dates here and there, they’re about to launch a full-scale U.S. tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Drowning Pool. We also have Avalon, the solo recording debut from frontman Sully Erna.

If you take the name of our website literally, Live Metal has no business reviewing Avalon. Though I don’t know how you would classify it, it certainly isn’t metal, or even hard rock. But why must we put labels on everything? In the case of Avalon, it seems to almost belittle its accomplishment by saying it is definitively part of this or that genre. It doesn’t matter what you call it; this is music designed to get you to do more than tap your foot or nod your head. Sully wants to move your soul. (more…)
