Sharon den Adel and Tarja Turunen

Tarja Turunen joined Dutch symphonic metallers, Within Temptation to perform “Paradise (What About Us?)” at Germany’s two-day M’era Luna festival which took place August 13-14. The bill also featured The Sisters of Mercy, Apocalyptica and many more. “Paradise (What About Us?)” was the lead single from Within Temptation’s sixth studio album, Hydra (2014). At the time, we described the album as a “best-of Within Temptation set,” that takes time to reflect but still sees the band “grow towards the future.” (Read review here.)

Tarja Turunen released her fifth studio album, a heavy rock album titled, The Shadow Self, on 5 August 2016.

The M’era Luna is a festival of goth, metal and industrial music. It is held annually on the second weekend of every August, in Hildesheim, Germany at Flugplatz Hildesheim-Drispenstedt, a former British Army airbase.

amaranthe-massive-addictiveReview by Jeff Maki
When I first heard Amaranthe a short time ago, I immediately pegged them for a band that someone like Kerrang would be all over. Featuring three vocalists—the beautiful siren, Elize Ryd; the death metal guy, Henrik Englund; and a power metal guy who looks like he was plucked out of Linkin Park’s lineup, Jake E.—they would have been all the rage and graced every metal magazine cover at Tower Records years ago. They’re pretty, slick and polished. I don’t know about magazine covers, but I can tell you their music video for “The Nexus” has an astounding 6.3 million views to date on YouTube, and the band proudly boasts they have 50 million plays on Spotify. Yet here in the U. S., they are still unknown. Will that change with the release of its third album, Massive Addictive?

Following the debut 2011 self titled album and the 2013 breakthrough album, The Nexus, the new album title makes perfect sense, because even for fans that are drawn to the more extreme metal bands, Amaranthe’s Soilwork/Epica/Linkin Park combination of styles molds death metal, pop, techno and power metal into a sound that is indeed massively addictive. WT-hydra-tourReview by Jeff Maki
Led by the second most famous Sharon in metal, the Netherlands’ Within Temptation—as addressed from the stage by Sharon den Adel herself—has now been “on the road” for 20 years. The band emerged from Holland in 1997 with its debut album Enter and was the country’s best-kept secret for years. Steadily building popularity and acclaim across the Netherlands and Europe in the early part of its career, it wasn’t until 2007 that the band was finally able to to bring its brand of symphonic metal to North America. To my knowledge, this is only its third tour here, after the Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour in 2007 and the 2012 Unforgiving Tour (read live recap). Within Temptation is a huge band internationally, and its latest album, Hydra (Feb. 4, 2014) (review) even debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart here in the States. But it is still a rare and near exclusive opportunity to see them live in the U.S. They certainly have a healthy fan base here, especially in Baltimore, Md., as fans filled Rams Head Live up to the balcony and lined up at the merch booth all the way across the entire bar area. Howard Jones is the "Devil You Know"

Howard Jones is the “Devil You Know”

During his decade-long run as frontman of Killswitch Engage, Howard Jones took the band to a new level. With the smash 2004 album The End of Heartache (which featured “Rose of Sharyn”), 2006’s As Daylight Dies (featuring the hit “My Curse”) and the unexpected radio hit of its cover version of Dio’s “Holy Diver,” the band was credited with spearheading the rise of metalcore and had become a household name. Then, in 2010, on a winter tour with The Devil Wears Prada and Dark Tranquillity, Jones unexpectedly had to sit out, with All That Remains vocalist Phil Labonte and former Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach filling in. At the time, there was much speculation and rumors were flying about the reason for Jones’ absence (he got a girl pregnant, back injury, other health issues). Time passed and with little or no word as to what was happening with Killswitch Engage’s lineup, the band announced in 2012 what fans had been expecting: Howard Jones was out, and eventually, he was replaced full-time by Leach. But why was he out?  (more…)

The album (and of course much heavier and “plugged”) version features rapper, Xzibit on the track.

WT-hydraReview by Jeff Maki
If you’ve been an avid reader of Live Metal over the years, then you’ll know I’m a huge fan of Within Temptation. Sharon den Adel is the reigning queen of female-fronted metal as far as I’m concerned, and the band, really dating back to The Silent Force (2004) has broken through to near-mainstream-like status with albums such as The Heart of Everything (2007) and The Unforgiving (2011), and through huge, one-time special concert events, Black Symphony (feat. the Metropole Orchestra, 2008)An Acoustic Night at the Theatre (2009) and Elements (15th anniversary show featuring  Il Novecentro Orchestra,  Sportpaleis, Belgium, 2012). The band has been operating like either its time is running out or, much like Metallica, is leaving no stone unturned in ways of creating innovative live experiences, releases and special formats for fans, maximizing its popularity.
